Welcome to the Buildings and Grounds Department,

The Buildings and Grounds Department is responsible for the maintenance and construction activities in 24 buildings that total about 1,500,000 square feet.  We are also responsible for maintaining approximately 380 acres of property.

The buildings include five secondary schools, ten elementary schools, an administration building, and a variety of other buildings that support our own operations as well as those of the Transportation Department, school lunch, and a warehouse.

Our grounds activities include the maintenance of paved areas, playgrounds, and the preparation of seven baseball fields, five softball fields, six soccer fields, four football fields and two track facilities.

Among school districts, we are uniquely structured in a way that allows us to perform most of the maintenance and complete certain construction projects with our own personnel. Our "shop" includes an electrical department led by Lee Churchwell, a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning department led by Mark Byrne, a plumbing department led by Rob Brennock, a locks, hardware and glazier department led by John Boykin, and a carpentry department led by Ira Rappaport and Jon Schliesman.  Our grounds department supervisor is Howard Hyman and our maintenance supervisor is Rick Haswell.

Our custodians are responsible for the day-to-day operation of our buildings, cleaning, and working with the building administrators to accommodate the many special activities that occur such as plays, recitals, facilities use by outside groups, and sporting events.  They are the first responders for emergencies and they keep our buildings open from 6:00 AM until 12:00 midnight and beyond.  Many of our buildings are also open on weekends and holidays

The custodians operate in what can best be described as a matrix management system.  That is to say that they are primarily accountable to the building Principals but there are many activities that require District-wide coordination.  Such activities include the procurement of supplies, vacation coverage, and night time activities.  The coordination effort is provided by Ed Hayden and Al Perotti.

Last but not least is the voice that answers when you dial 6480.  She is the person that keeps us all moving and together and she probably knows more about boiler repairs, pipe fittings, and electrical components than any secretary alive, Geri Sullivan.
