Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address

  • The Gettysburg Address was a speech given off by Abraham Lincoln on Novemeber 19, 2009 on the battle feild near Ghettysburg.

  • In July 1863 for 3 days the most critical battles of the Civil War was fought right outside the village of Gettysburg. 51, 000 soldiers were wounded , killed , or missing .

  • The armies left the city in shambles. 17 acres of land became the Gettysburg National Cemetery.

  • There are 5 known hand written  copies of the Gettysburg adress . The Library of Congress own 2 out of the 5. President Lincoln gave one of these to each of his two private secretaries, John Nicolay and John Hay

  •  Lincoln's aim in his Gettysburg Address was to extol liberty and honor the people fighting for our nation who died in hope that there would still be a nation in the end. With the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln gave meaning to the sacrifice of the dead-he gave inspiration to the living.
