Geography



 

*The Mohawks were people of the New York State.

*Some of them still live in the New York area, but they retreated to Canada in the 1700's .

Settlement



*They settled in 4 nations which are now known as Ontario and Quebec.

*Other communities in which the Mohawks lived in were New York and Quebec.

*Some Mohawk people live on six nations reserved.

*Lived in village's full of long houses.

Shelter


*They lived in homes called Long houses.

*The long houses were long wood- frame buildings covered with sheets of elm bark.

*One Mohawk house could be a hundred feet long.

*One house held up to 60 people.

Food


*They were farming people.

*The women planted crops of corn, beans, and squash.

*They also harvested wild berries and herbs.

*The men hunted for deer and elk and also fish in rivers.

*They mostly ate corn, bread, soups.



Religion


*They believed that Hahgwehdiyo is the creator of god.

*They also believed that some one named Goal is there was the wind god.

*The other thing that they believed that the Jugah are the nature spirits.

Clothing


*Mohawk men wore breech clothing with leggings.

*Mohawk women wore wraparound skirts with shorter leggings.

*Men didn't often wear shirts in Mohawk culture.

*Women often wore a poncho-like tunic.
